Bishop Zarama conveys priestly and diaconal ministry appointments

Most Reverend Luis Rafael Zarama, Bishop of Raleigh, is pleased to convey the following official appointments and announcements regarding priestly and diaconal ministry in the Diocese of Raleigh.

Appointment Effective June 3, 2019

Very Reverend Scott E. McCue, V.F., Pastor of Saint Thomas More Parish, Chapel Hill, Diocesan Scout Chaplain and Dean of the Piedmont Deanery, is additionally appointed Administrator of Holy Family Parish in Hillsborough through July 2019.

Appointments Effective June 25, 2019

Pastors

Reverend Samuel J. Buchholz, Pastor of Saint Peter Parish in Greenville, is appointed to a second-term as Pastor.

Reverend M. Arturo Cabra, Pastor of Holy Spirit Parish in Kinston, is appointed to a second-term as Pastor.

Reverend John V. Gournas, Pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Southport, is appointed Pastor of Infant of Prague Parish in Jacksonville.

Reverend Thanh N. Nguyen, Pastor of Saint Matthew Parish in Durham, is appointed Pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Southport.

Reverend Patrick A. Keane, Pastor of Saint Mark Parish in Wilmington, is appointed Pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Raleigh.

Reverend Gregory D. Spencer, Pastor of Infant of Prague Parish in Jacksonville, is appointed Pastor of Saint Mark Parish in Wilmington.

Administrators

Reverend Edward J. Burch, retired from active priestly ministry, is appointed to a one year-term as Administrator of Saint Matthew Parish in Durham.

Reverend Thomas S. Duggan, Parochial Vicar at Infant of Prague Parish in Jacksonville, is appointed Administrator of Mother of Mercy Parish in Washington.

Reverend James J. Magee, III, Parochial Vicar at Saint Catherine of Siena Parish in Wake Forest, is appointed Administrator of Saint Catherine of Siena Parish in Tarboro and Priest Chaplain at Saint John Paul II High School in Greenville.

Reverend Clyde Timberlake Meares, Pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish in Rocky Mount and Immaculate Conception Mission in Rocky Mount is appointed to an additional one-year term as Administrator.

Parochial Vicars

Reverend Edisson De Jesus Urrego Restrepo, Parochial Vicar at Saint Michael the Archangel Parish in Cary, is appointed Parochial Vicar at Infant of Prague Parish in Jacksonville.

Reverend Michael G. Schuetz, Parochial Vicar at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Raleigh, is appointed Parochial Vicar at Holy Family Parish in Elizabeth City and Saint Katharine Drexel Mission in Maple.

Appointments Effective August 1, 2019

Pastor

Reverend Ryan W. Elder, Administrator of Holy Family Parish in Hillsborough, is appointed Pastor of Holy Family Parish.

Announcements

Reverend Brendan Buckler, Pastor of Mother of Mercy Parish in Washington, has been given permission for appointment to priestly ministry in the Diocese of Charlotte, effective June 25, 2019.

Sincere appreciation for his many years of dedicated service is extended to Reverend Frank M. Raffo, Pastor of Saint Catherine of Siena Parish in Tarboro, as he retires from active priestly ministry, effective June 25, 2019.  Father Raffo will have residence in his family home in Pinehurst.  

Gratitude is also extended to Reverend Christopher Ryan, S.J., for his faithful and generous priestly ministry serving as Parochial Vicar at Saint Raphael the Archangel Parish in Raleigh.  Father Ryan has been reassigned to priestly ministry in another diocese by his Provincial, effective May 1, 2019.

Reverend Kuriakose Chacko Vadana, a priest of the St. Thomas SyroMalabar Catholic Diocese of Chicago, has been appointed Pastor of Lourdes Matha SyroMalabar Catholic Church in Apex by his Bishop, Mar Jacob Angadiath.

Father Vadana has been granted the Faculties of the Diocese of Raleigh to assist the Latin Rite Pastors in the Raleigh Deanery, when available to do so.

The Legionaries of Christ will assume the pastoral and spiritual care of the students and faculty at The Doggett Center for Catholic Campus Ministry at North Carolina State University.  One priest campus minister is to be assigned, effective in July 2019 with an additional priest to assist.  Residence will be at Saint Joseph Parish in Raleigh in October 2019, with temporary residence at Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral Parish rectory, effective July 2019.

Deacon Félix Sáez, Assistant Director of the Diocesan Office of the Permanent Diaconate and deacon at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Raleigh, is appointed Director of the Diocesan Office of the Permanent Diaconate, effective June 25, 2019. Deacon Sáez continues his diaconal ministry at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Raleigh.
