Position Summary:
The Lay Evangelizer is a co-worker of the Glenmary Home Missioners with the expectation s/he will adopt the missionary charism of Glenmary. The lay evangelizer will be the first full time evangelizer in a county that has never had a Catholic Church. They will relate to either the parish closest to them or if they desire greater Catholic presence may relate to the nearest Glenmary parish. The vision of the ministry of this position is to focus beyond the immediate life of the parish reaching out to the unchurched, rather than directly providing nurture or pastoral care to an established Catholic community.
The person in this position is to carry out the task of evangelization of non-Christians* in the Glenmary mission(s) where assigned with the goals of deepening relationships, promoting dialogue, living charity, and prophetically sharing the fullness of the gospel, with non-Christians.
*The target audience for this position is non-Christians. This target audience is delineated as individuals who self-identify, or are living, as ‘unaffiliated,’ ‘unchurched,’ or NONEs (indicating that they have no religious preference), even though they may have some background in Christianity. Though a Lay Evangelizer will likely engage ‘inactive’ Catholics, this group is not the primary audience for this position.
The Lay Evangelizer will live in Northampton County, North Carolina.

Glenmary Home Missioners is a Roman Catholic religious society of priests, religious brothers and lay coworkers who establish lasting Catholic presence in areas of the Deep South and Appalachia.
Key responsibilities:
- Plans, organizes, and carries out creative methods and practices of evangelization outside of the normal functioning of the parish, which could include, for instance, ‘Alpha Groups,’ ‘presence ministry,’ or ‘fresh expressions of the church,’ to encounter, engage with, and share the gospel with, non-Christian members of the county, as defined above, with the goal of facilitating growth in the life of Christ, including full participation in the Catholic Church, for those they encounter.
- Conducts evangelization through efforts jointly planned and carried out by members of non-Catholic Christian denominations in the area. Organizes, and invites non-Christians to participate in, intermediary, ‘seeker friendly’ expressions of faith practice, such as reading groups, bible studies, prayer groups, or praise
Minimum Requirements:
- Minimum level of Education: Bachelor’s Degree
- Well trained in Catholic history, theology, and doctrine.
- Skilled in evangelization
- Fully initiated, practicing Catholic in full communion with the Catholic Church.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bi-lingual English/Spanish
